Discovery of the Antonine Treasure IN SAINT-ANTOINE-L’ABBAYE
The visit begins at the foot of the abbey church, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Dauphiné. When the relics of Saint Anthony the Great arrived in these places around the year 1080, no one suspected that the abbey would be at the origin of a powerful and rich hospital order. The Treasury of the Antonines is the demonstration of this power and this wealth. After passing through the heavy wooden door, you enter a world of relics, chalices, paintings and sculptures. A little detour through the medicine of the time all the same and then you discover the relics and their reliquaries in wood and silver. Great choir books are waiting to be read again. In another chapel, the abbey and the village are revealed in the form of a painting. Almost nothing has changed since the XNUMXth century, like a freeze frame. The highlight of the show is a rare piece of furniture: the hatter. Semi-circular drawers, copes embroidered with gold and silver threads, in silk, in velvet. Everything is exceptional about this piece of furniture. And finally, admire the chalices, monstrances and paten still used today!

Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye: from the Way of Saint-Jacques to the tramway
What if we told you that the Way of Saint James and a railway line passed through the same place? What if you came with us to explore these two paths and learn about their history? This guided tour invites you to discover the Tramway Route that merges with the Way of Saint James. Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye is a major pilgrimage site. For others, the Abbey of Saint-Antoine was just a stopover on a much longer route: the Way of Saint James. Did you know that it passed through the Abbey of Saint-Antoine? We are between Geneva and Le Puy-en-Velay where Swiss, Dutch and Eastern European pilgrims meet and cross France. From Saint-Antoine, the pilgrims then joined the Arles route or the Le Puy route. Centuries later, modernity invites itself into the landscape. Thick smoke accompanies a new machine: the locomotive. The tramway passes through the countryside: it connects Saint-Marcellin to the suburbs of Lyon. It will carry thousands of travelers, goods including silk and shape the landscape.
Today, the tramway no longer echoes through the countryside, but its facilities are still there: the remains of a viaduct, tunnels, a street name. Discover the fascinating history of the Way of Saint James to the tramway between Saint-Marcellin and Lyon.
Little bonus: a visit to the Saint-Jean-le-Fromental chapel.
