Do we need any equipment?
No telescope is needed to begin. With the naked eye, you can already observe constellations, shooting stars, and the Milky Way. A pair of binoculars can then enhance the experience.
When to observe the stars?
Just before leaving, find out about the weather, it changes very quickly in the mountains: good observation conditions correspond to a clear sky, stable over time and without clouds. The occurrence of fog and mist should also be anticipated!
The best conditions are found on moonless nights with clear skies. Summer remains a prime time, especially in August during the Perseid meteor shower.
the right equipment
Even in summer, nights can be cool in the mountains. Pack warm clothes, a waterproof jacket, and a blanket or folding chair to make yourself comfortable.
Also consider bringing a red light headlamp (to preserve your night vision), a sky map or an app downloaded in advance, and why not a thermos of hot drink.
During observation, avoid all light sources, including your phone screen.
good practices in the natural environment
Locate your observation site before nightfall and set up in a suitable space, respecting private property, agricultural activities and sensitive areas.
On the Rimets nature reserve, fires are prohibited and the rocky terrain of the Fossil Valley must not be trampled in order to preserve the species that live there.
Before leaving, please ensure you leave no trace of your visit: take all your trash and equipment with you. With a little discretion, you might be lucky enough to spot some of the Vercors' nocturnal wildlife.
