The Vercors Massif: Discover the Vercors and its sumptuous Gorges du Nan
Exit La Belle Via at Saint-Gervais. Follow the Route des Ecouges, which will take you uphill and past a few small waterfalls, then through the rocks into the Ecouges Tunnel!
A little further on, up to the Col de Romeyère, you'll have time to admire the Roche de Méaudre. At the top of the pass, leave the main road and take the Mont Noir road on the right and continue climbing.
You are entering the Coulmes State Forest. Behind the trees, the ridge line continues to follow you.
As you climb, even higher peaks appear in the distance, beyond the valley. Enjoy this sublime view. The road will take you back down into the heart of the forest.
Then follow the direction of Malleval-en-Vercors, on the right. You will pass to the other side of the massif and head straight towards the Gorges du Nan. The view during the descent is resplendent. In Malleval, you will discover the imposing sculpture of the Recumbent Figure, built in homage to the Vercors resistance fighters. As you go deeper into the valley, you will pass through the heart of the gorges and close to the rocks. Impressive!
Continue down through the trees to reach Cognin-les-Gorges. You'll now find yourself back on the flat land and the walnut groves. If you'd like, turn left for a short stroll through the pretty village, before leaving your bike and following the path that goes up the Nan to admire the waterfalls at the heart of the gorges up close. Also, check out the magnificent traditional walnut drying shed, listed as a Historic Monument.
Continue along the Route de la Vorcière then the Chemin des Tailleurs de Marbre to reach the village of Rovon then La Belle Via.
