Circuit 6: Cliffs Circuit

Museum Overview

This sporty route of around 50 kilometers with a 1000 meter elevation gain takes you to discover the contrasting landscapes at the foot of the Vercors, before immersing you in the spectacular atmosphere of the massif up to the Presles plateau.

The route starts in Saint-Romans, at the crossroads of Quatre Routes. The first 20 kilometers, relatively easy, cross the agricultural plain between walnut fields and various crops. As the route progresses, the majestic cliffs of the Vercors gradually approach, announcing the ascent to come.
The climb begins in Pont-en-Royans. Initially gentle until Choranche (km 25), it winds its way into the Bourne Gorges. The slope then becomes steeper on the magnificent Presles climb: 500 meters of elevation gain in 7 kilometers. A break at the Col de Toutes Aures is highly recommended to enjoy an exceptional view of the valley, cliffs, and gorges.
The climb culminates with the spectacular passage through the Presles tunnels, dug directly into the rock. You then emerge onto the Presles plateau, in a characteristic Vercors atmosphere. Another 5 kilometers of gentle ascent take you to Faz, the highest point of the route.
The following descent is fast and scenic. Be extra careful, especially on bends, and respect other road users. Take the time to admire the superb views of the surrounding massifs: Chambaran, Pilat, Ardèche, and more.
Back in the valley, you have just one last kilometer to reach the starting point. Along the way, take a look at the picturesque ruins of Beauvoir Castle, the final touch of heritage on a circuit rich in contrasts.

- Choose Pont-en-Royans for your lunch break: a bucolic picnic by the water at the foot of the hanging houses or a meal on the terrace of the water museum restaurant, which has been awarded the Accueil Vélo label, with tasting of the rarest waters in the world!
- Before arriving, if your legs still feel capable of making one last little climb, do not hesitate to make the detour to the medieval site of the Carmelite Convent for a cultural break or simply have a snack at the foot of the ruins facing the panorama over the Isère Valley.
