Museum Overview

The museum tour traces the intertwined history of perfume and well-being through the centuries. Come and discover raw materials, both plant and animal-based, and experience iconic fragrances recreated for the occasion.

Discover a museum space entirely dedicated to the history of perfumes in the heart of the remarkable heritage site of Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye. By offering a fresh perspective on the history of therapeutic scents from Antiquity to the present day, this museum experience invites you to a multi-sensory and interactive exploration, directly engaging with the heritage bequeathed by the Hospitallers of Saint Anthony.

In a setting inspired by old-fashioned apothecaries, discover a herbalist's counter complete with authentic pharmaceutical jars. These jars once contained a wide variety of medicinal plants, used in the meticulous preparation of remedies.

This immersive experience is enhanced by integrated audiovisual content. You will meet Marie Cantel, a hospital sister at the Hôtel-Dieu in Lyon during the 17th century. She shares her daily life, her healing practices, and her expertise with plants. Among the recipes presented is Paracelsus' balm, with its almost miraculous properties. Deafness, asthma, digestive pain… It cured almost everything!
