As night falls, the Riga Orchestra and Choir, under the direction of the adventurous Daniel Kawka, promise a magnificent evening with Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.
For its Grand Opening Celebration, the Berlioz Festival invites young and old to an exceptional site of Isère heritage, the Carmelite Convent in Beauvoir-en-Royans.

With Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, the opening concert of the Berlioz Festival offers a monumental stage cantata for solo singers, multiple choirs, and a large orchestra. In the historic setting of the Carmelite Convent in Beauvoir-en-Royans, the Riga Orchestra and Choir, under the direction of the adventurous Daniel Kawka, promise a spectacular vocal and instrumental drama.
Created in 1937, Carmina Burana is inspired by an eponymous collection of 13th-century medieval poems, rediscovered in the 19th century at Benediktbeuern Abbey in Bavaria. The 24 poems selected by the composer, blending Latin, Middle High German, and Old French, have as their main theme the capricious moods of Fortune, who constantly disrupts human life with her whims. Evoking in turn the reign of chance, the return of spring, the diversity of pleasures, and the fickleness of feelings, they are intended to be sung with instrumental accompaniment and "magical images."
The work is divided into three thematic sections framed by the famous chorus "O Fortuna": "In Spring," "In the Tavern," and "Court of Love." The repetition of the first song in the finale gives the sequence of pastoral, comic, and bawdy scenes a cyclical form, like the wheel of Fortune.
