Presentation

Mont Noir is the highest cycle pass in the Vercors. The route via Saint-Pierre de Chérennes is probably the most difficult ascent of the massif. Borrowed in 2018 by the Critérium du Dauphiné, it had been classified Col Hors Category.

From Beauvoir en Royans, take the D31 towards Saint-Pierre de Chérennes, which you will cross after 2,5 km.
Continue this road in the forest for several kilometers until you reach the hamlet of Faz (km 10,5). Go straight in the direction of the Nordic resort of Coulmes and Mont Noir. Arrived at the crossroads of Patente (km 15), winter departure of the cross-country ski trails, continue straight. Finally, at the bridle, at kilometer 17, turn left to complete the climb.
The ascent is long and irregular, but not very crowded. The elevation is exceptional for a pass of this altitude.

For the descent, you can descend by the same route, or choose one of the many descents offered by Mont Noir: by the Ecouges, by Rencurel and the Gorges de la Bourne, by Saint Pont en Royans or by Malleval en Vercors . Be careful on the descent, the tar is sometimes of poor quality.
